Organising a funeral is difficult at the best of times but when it concerns a child it becomes even harder. Funerals are a sobering occasion most of the time; but when it comes to a child it can sometimes be too much to bear. There are many parents who try to introduce a bit more lightness when it comes to the funeral of their child. Black, which is the traditional colour of mourning, is often overruled in favour of bright colours at the actual ceremony and a less traditional atmosphere is sometimes adopted although for each and every parent their wishes are the ones that are obeyed. Many still mourn with black and keep to a very traditional funeral as it is frequently more tragic when a child dies.

Over the years there have been all sorts of extravagant memorials which have been used to help represent something the child in question loved when they lived. From racing cars to the child's favourite toy being carved and fitted over their place of rest, often this individualism to mark their child brings a welcome change to both the parents and other mourners from the reams of traditional headstones row after row in a cemetery.

In this day and age there seems to be no limits to what can be carved or created, from the imaginative to the funny to the artistic but for most parents out there, money is of course a leading factor and whilst it would be many parents' first choice to have their child's favourite toy carved out of marble, for most, this is something that is not within their budget. But there are many companies that offer traditional headstones and gravestones that also specialise in children's memorials and provide headstones that are a bit different for this particular funeral.

Heart shaped memorials are popular for children, as are gravestones with angels carved on top. So too are teddy bear headstones or bunny rabbits which for a young child is appropriate. There is also a wide choice of headstones that have a sports theme like a football incorporated into it, for those keen on a particular sport or other such themed gravestones which would be appropriate for their child.

Afterwards, we rode the scenic White Pass Yukon Railroad (Goldrush Train) back to Skagway, Alaska, then we boarded the MV Columbia for the return trip to Seattle, Washington. Ten Mistakes When Taking A Cruise

It's a shame to lay out $250 - $2,500 on a dreamy cruise vacation only to encounter unnecessary mishaps and inconveniences. So, in an effort to minimize the likelihood of a bump in the road to your perfect vacation, here are some common potholes that you can avoid.

Mistake #1: Not Making Your Luggage Distinctive. At the end of your cruise, your luggage will be placed in a huge room with THOUSANDS of pieces of luggage, probably in some designated area based on the color of a luggage tag provided by the ship. No matter how familiar you think you are with your own luggage, it's amazing how well your bags will blend in with the mass of cargo surrounding them. Having a quick, easy way to identify your luggage will be a major relief, especially if it gets misplaced.

BUT, that isn't the main reason to make your luggage stand out. You will be entering this cavernous room with a couple thousand other people, some of whom stayed up all night partying. They are going to be impatient to get their bag and get out and there is a fairly good chance that their vision isn't so good. If your bag looks like their bag, it could be a goner. And, if a stranger does take your luggage it could be hours, even days, before you get it back.

Do something durable and noticeable to your luggage so that it not only is recognizable to you, but also let's bleary-eyed fellow travelers know that your bag is not their bag. Put stickers on it, paint a day-glo streak around it, sew a teddy bear onto the outside... just make sure it stands out.

Mistake #2: Not Researching Shore Excursions Beforehand. It should come as no surprise that cruise line advertising folks have the ability to describe each and every shore excursion as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Of course, no cruise is complete without shore excursions and many of them are absolutely wonderful chances to do things you would never do otherwise. But, be smart here. It's okay to get hoodwinked into thinking that palm trees do sway all day long and that sand feels like silk under your feet. But, it's a whole 'nother thing to be looking forward to that perfect, serene afternoon on a remote beach only to find out you have 500 friends, some with young kids, crowding around you and bumping into your beach chair while vendors hawk everything from coconut shells to t-shirts.

Before you commit, read some reviews, talk to the cruise ship shore excursion folks, ask fellow passengers, do some thinking. Most cruise ships have a "No Refund" policy on shore excursions, but don't be afraid to ask for one if your experience is truly unacceptable. Better still, find out what you're getting before you go. Many (if not most) shore excursions are just great and you'll be happy you went. But cover your stump and you'll be glad you did.

Mistake #3: Runaway Bar Tabs. Unless you specifically choose a package that includes it, your bar tab is NOT included in the "all inclusive" part of your cruise. Adding to the bite is the ubiquitous 15% gratuity that gets added to every purchase you make on board a ship.

I could suggest that you drink less, but that's just plain dumb! You're on a cruise! So, pay attention to how much you drink. Those cute little umbrellas drinks that come in a stunning canary-yellow cup will cost you about twice what a basic cocktail costs. Cruise ship booze is already costly enough; you don't need to help them out by spending more for a cup that you'll stash in a closet when you get home.

Cruise ships have a policy against bringing alcohol on board, but the policy is very loosely enforced if you don't flaunt it. In other words, don't strap a handle onto a case of Budweiser and check it as baggage or load up your carry-on bag with bottles of Wild Turkey. Discreetly packed airline bottles of booze or cans of beer will probably go unnoticed. Don't try to sponsor a frat party, but you can definitely help yourself out a bit.

You are allowed to bring your own wine on board if you plan to drink it at dinner, though you are charged a "corking fee". And, you can also bring a small stash of non-alcoholic beverages (soda, water, etc) with no problem. You should definitely bring some water, especially if you're cruising in warm climates.

Mistake #4: Ignoring the Fury of the Sun Gods. Sun Burn treatments are the fourth most popular reason that people on cruises visit the ship's infirmary. (The first three are: 1) bumps and bruises, 2) indigestion, 3) seasickness). Once you're burned, there isn't much anyone can do for you except try to alleviate the pain. (My favorite treatment for that is something called "Traumeel". You can't find it in the drugstore, but most health food places will have it.)

If you're cruising in the winter months (Nov - Feb), you don't have as big a problem. Even when you are in the sub-tropics, and even though your skin probably hasn't seen sun for several months, the sun is hitting you at an angle and that makes all the difference. You still need to be careful, but you have more leeway.

In the spring and summer months, when the sun is overhead, you can get burned in as little as an hour, especially in the afternoon hours. Some silly people forgo the sunscreen because they want to make sure they get a tan. Not a good idea. Start your sunbathing session with at least 15 SPF (30 if you haven't been in the sun, with extra protection on your lips). As you get closer to your end time, use less SPF. Even with a good sun blocker, your friends and co-workers will still know that you've been out in the sun.

Hats are a serious plus if you are in sunburn territory. Most people don't put sunscreen on their heads, and so the part of your body that is getting the most direct rays for the longest period of time remains unprotected. Visors don't protect your skull; you need some type of covering.

Mistake #5: No First Aid Kit. As previously noted, there are several reasons that passengers end up wasting time (and sometimes money) visiting the infirmary. You may not be able to avoid all mishaps, but you can prepare for the lesser blunders. By the way, all of this applies double if you're traveling with kids!

Bumps and Bruises. The biggest reason people visit the ship's doctor probably has something to do with mixing booze, slippery surfaces, metal railings and the rolling motion of the ship. For most of your injuries, the right size band-aid and a good analgesic crème will do the trick. A simple travel or camping first-aid kit will have what you need.

Indigestion. One of the drawbacks of having such constant access to all that wonderful rich food that cruise ships are famous for is that people eat it. And eat it. And eat some more. Unless you are a strict disciplinarian, you can expect to consume about two or three times your normal food quantity in an average day. Add to that the steady consumption of alcohol that is a hallmark of cruising and voila! Indigestion. Take along some Alka Seltzer, some Pepto Bismol and sum type of antacid tablet, like Tums or Rolaids. All of these are available in tablet form. Some ships stores will have some of this, but not always and if you need it in the middle of the night you're out of luck.

Seasickness. The best treatment is prevention. After you get it, well... yuck! Check out the various forms of Dramamine that are now available, including pills and patches. The directions will tell you how much lead time before you hit the waves you need to get the maximum effect. You can also get acupressure wrist bands that work really well with some people.

One of the best treatments I've ever seen for treating seasickness once it hits you is Coke and soda crackers - lots of both. Some people say that 7-Up works also, but I think there is something in the caffeine in Coke that helps the whole process. If you are feeling sick, your cabin is the worst place to be unless the weather topside is really bad. Being able to get fresh air and see the horizon helps to trigger the brain sensors that calm seasickness.

Headaches. We all know that booze can make your head scream for mercy, but so can sun and lots of new food. If you're not used to heavy carbs in your diet and you scarf up lots of pastries, ice creams or gourmet desserts, your body can trigger the same symptoms it does when detoxing from too much alcohol. And, if you experience bumps, cuts or sunburn a pain reliever is a good thing. Have a supply of different types of pain reliever. Depending on the reason for your pain, aspirin may not work as well as Tylenol or Ibuprofen in a given circumstance. (Do I need to remind you to read the label and follow the directions?)

Mistake #6: What? No Camera? A Picture Really Is Worth A Thousand Words. It's hard to imagine, but some people will actually take the trip of their dreams and not take a camera. Or, they'll take a camera, but they won't keep it with them. Don't do that. If you have a digital camera, use it, use it, use it. If you don't have a digital camera, spring for about three or four disposable ones. And be sure to take you camera to the Life Boat Drill. You'll know why when you get there.

A side bar to this camera thing is the Photo-ops that you have all over the ship. There will be dozens of them on your cruise - when you're boarding, when you're dining, when you're getting off the ship, at the pool - at times it will seem like some one is taking your picture every time you turn around. You are, of course, free to decline. But I recommend that you give it a shot. Yes, these photos can be goofy, even cheesy, but they can also be a lot of fun. Plus, you just might end up with the best shot of the cruise. Some of the settings are outright elegant, rivaling what you would find at a studio. It's a great way to get a nice formal picture for your living room or to send to your family, and there's no sitting fee!

Mistake #7: Buying From Street Vendors. Where ever you go on your cruise, once you step ashore you will be approached (accosted?) by local folks trying to sell you something. I'm not talking about the shops and makeshift kiosks you may find, I'm talking about the guys selling Cuban cigars out of their trunks, or pirated CDs out of a cardboard box.

Your best bet, unless you've been there and really know the score, is to just say NO. Regardless of how appealing the offer, just say NO. Most of the products are very low quality and you have no way to check it out before you buy. I know of people who bought CD cases with no CDs inside, watches that didn't work, Cuban cigars purchased in the local drugstore, "handmade" jewelry that came out of bubble gum machines, the list is endless. And this applies SIXTEEN FOLD if some local guy tries to sell you some pot.

In most ports of call frequented by American-based vessels, this street traffic is actually illegal. You probably won't get into trouble, but why risk it? Save your money for the honest locals and their little shops that are going to sell you watches that do work, they just fall apart in a few weeks.

Mistake #8: Thinking You'll Save Money "In Town". One of the charming aspects of cruising is the ritual of visiting the local markets and shops. This is truly a fun experience and you can find all manner of unique and special items, but you probably won't find any real bargains. There are bargains to be found, but you really need to know what you're looking for and what it's worth in the US. Don't be cynical about it. It's all part of the experience. Somehow, buying a wooden giraffe in Grand Turk is better than buying the same wooden giraffe at Pier 1 Imports, even if you pay a little more. Go figure.

You actually can save money when you buy liquor or tobacco products, but it might not be as good a deal as it first seems. Most ports have what are called "duty free" shops which means that there was no "duty" (i.e. import tariffs) paid on the products and so they are cheaper to sell in that country. The same applies to diamonds and other fine jewelry. The challenge is knowing what an item is actually worth. Just because these guys saved on the import fees doesn't mean they're passing the saving on to you. Also keep in mind that you are supposed to declare to US customs any purchases you make in a foreign country. Duty Free in Nassau doesn't mean it's duty free when you come back to the US. There are certain exemptions for personal items, but if you shell out some big bucks, you might lose the saving when you pay the US import fees.

So, don't be a miser. Spend freely. Do some Christmas shopping. Spread your money around the local economy and have fun doing it. Just remember, these guys are in the business of selling stuff to foreign tourists. They know where the money is coming from and they know how to keep as much of it as they can.

Mistake #9: Sticking Around The Port. Yes, ships are safe in the harbor, but that's not what ships are built for. Most ports of call, especially when the call is for a day or less, are set up to provide the ships passengers with a particular experience. They accomplish this by making their ports as visitor-friendly as possible. The experience of Mexico that you get right outside the port in Cozumel is decidedly different than the experience of Mexico on the other side of the island. Around the port, all manner of business are set up to appeal to a particular comfort-zone and a particular economy.

But, often, just a few miles from the port, you can have a completely different experience. If you travel to Grand Turk, for example, you can spend a delightful afternoon at the resort-like environment of Margaritaville. The beach is well-maintained, though a bit crowded. There is a huge beautiful pool with lots of palm trees and man-made waterfalls. A beer will cost you about $6 and a burger will be about $8.

But a short taxi ride to the old downtown area will take you to a much more authentic location. At least for the time being. You can stroll crowded, dusty streets; see skinny dogs shuffling through garbage cans and have a local beer and piece of fried chicken for about $3.75 at one of the local pubs. Sure, the pub would never pass an American food inspection and you may have to do without air conditioning. But the experience can be wonderful. You won't get that experience staying close to the port.

Of course, you want to be safe and you want to be able to get back to your ship before it sales, so keep all that in mind. But, there is a whole universe of color, sound, smells and people that don't ever get to the port and it's worth the trouble to find it.

Mistake #10: Not Preparing For the Journey Home. Sooner or later (it will seem much too soon), your cruise will come to an end and you'll have to return to the land of making your own bed and cooking your own food. The journey home is often an irritating necessity and something to endure as quickly as possible. But, if you rush back into the reality you left behind, it's kind of like a diver coming to the surface too quick after a deep dive. Your mind and body will resist.

If possible, do something fun on the way home. Stay an extra night in a hotel or visit a landmark or even a theme park. At the very least, stop at a nice restaurant for a leisurely lunch or dinner. A quiet picnic (even with fast food) at a rest area can be a perfectly delightful way to transition home.

Here's a couple of things to do to make your return less stressful and hurried.

o If you're driving, fill up with gas before you go to the port. Make sure that, when you leave, you don't have to stop until you want to.

o When you have breakfast on your last morning, take some pastries with you, or even make yourself an egg sandwich. If you thought to bring a thermos with you, fill up on coffee or juice for the ride home.

o Leave some bottles of water in your car. Many bus companies will allow you to leave some personal items on the bus when you get to the port, so include some water and a pillow.

o Find out what the weather is back home. I once stood shivering in 40 degree weather outside the airport in a pair of shorts and an aloha shirt. Hey, it was 85 degrees when I left Puerto Rico that morning!

o Take the next day off. If you are returning to port on a weekend, good. If not, schedule the time off before you leave. Or call in sick. You'll be SOOOOOOOO glad you did.

A Final Suggestion.

Keep up with all of the information documents you got on the cruise - daily ships newsletter, shore excursion price list, etc. When you get home, file all this in a folder and then use if for reference material for yourself or someone else the next time a cruise is planned. And before your forget, write down all the things you wish you'd thought of and that you wish you had known. Make a complete list and stash it with the other cruise information you brought back.

From Anchorage we flew for about one hour to Kodiak, Kodiak Island, Alaska with ERA Airline on a 37-seat De Havilland two engine, high wing, propeller driven aircraft. At Kodiak Airport we chartered a Piper six-seater single engine plane to fly to Port Lion's, Kodiak Island, Alaska. Terry the pilot gave us ear plugs as the racket from the engine was deafening. Terry flew low over beautiful scenery, snow capped mountains and the Gulf of Alaska waters and landed on the tiny airstrip outside Port Lion's, Kodiak Island, Alaska. Denise May, the wife of our Guide and Boat Captain Bob May, and their fourteen year old son Arthur, met us at the airstrip and drove us to Camai House in Port Lion's located in beautiful natural surroundings. Have you ever noticed that world travelers seem to have an easier time affording their trips than people who are going on vacation? Think about it. You've been saving for months, maybe years, for that trip to Hawaii. The guy next door just got back from Singapore, and he's headed to Australia in a few weeks. Why is that?

To save money, you need to be flexible. If you have your heart set on a particular destination at a particular time, you've given away your flexibility, and you'll pay more for the privilege to get exactly what you want, when you want it. On the other hand, if you just want to travel somewhere new, you have the advantage. You can go wherever the low fares take you.

Just about everyone is familiar with discount fare sites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Priceline. What most people don't realize is that the six legacy carriers--United, U.S. Airways, American, Delta, Northwest, and Continental--offer a variety of special fares on a regular basis exclusively through their own Web sites. (To be accurate, Alaska Air is also a legacy carrier, but its specialized market works differently; we're only talking about the six listed above.)

One type of discount is the last-minute discount. The biggest cost of flying a plane is the fuel that it takes to get it off the ground and keep it there. Flights don't get cancelled because they're underbooked, but every empty seat is lost revenue for the airline. It's better to have a seat filled than to have one empty, so airlines cut fares on seats that would otherwise be empty to get people in them.

But there's a twist. If a flight is popular, then getting a ticket at the last minute costs more than usual. And the airlines don't know whether a flight will be popular or not until a few days before it's scheduled to leave. So, every week--usually on Tuesdays--airlines publish last-minute discount fares for the week.

Last-minute discounts are always based on origin and destination. To see where you might be able to go, just look up the airport or airports out which you may be able to fly. Be sure to read the terms. Last-minute fare specials are nonrefundable and generally require you to leave and return on specific days (though not at specific times). A typical domestic last-minute fare will require a Saturday departure with return on Sunday or Monday. International last-minute fares may run Thursday to Monday or Friday to Tuesday.

Airlines also offer promotional discounts on rates that they want to draw attention. If an airline just added an exciting new route or hub, a special fare offer is a good way to get the word out. Promotional fares also help airlines fill seats to destinations that are out of season. For instance, United almost always offers winter fare specials to Germany, but warm-weather destinations are discounted in the summer.

The restrictions on promotional fares vary but tend to be more flexible than last-minute fares. There's always a requirement to purchase by a certain date and travel within a certain period. Most promotional fares outside of the U.S. have a minimum stay required at the destination (ranging from a Saturday night for Europe to as much as a week for Asian destinations). And, of course, these are nonrefundable fares.

Finding special fares can be a bit time consuming. The specials are published on the airlines' own Web sites, which means you need to visit each one in turn to see all of the options. You can cut that back a bit by focusing on airlines that have major presence at your local airport, but then you might miss a really good deal.

For travelers looking to see the world, though--especially busy people traveling one weekend at a time--discount fares put your flexibility to its best use, introducing you to new places that you may never have thought worth seeing until you took the opportunity to see them. Whether we're talking about fares or destinations, remember that some of the best things in life are relatively obscure.

The McDonnell-Douglas MD-11, intended successor to its earlier DC-10 and the third widebody tri-jet after the DC-10 itself and the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, traces its origins to the General Electric and Pratt and Whitney engine competition to provide a suitable powerplant for the Lockheed C-5A Galaxy military transport, resulting in the first high bypass ratio turbofan, while the DC-10, the result of American Airlines' 1966 requirements for a 250-pasenger transcontinental airliner, had been built in five basic versions, inclusive of the DC-10-10, the DC-10-15, the DC-10-30, the DC-10-40, and the KC-10 Extender, achieving an ultimate production run of 446. Program cost overruns had intermittently necessitated the Douglas Aircraft Company's merger with McDonnell, hitherto a military aircraft manufacturer, in order to ensure survival of both the company and its aircraft.

Douglas design studies for both narrow and widebody successors, powered by high bypass ratio turbofans and accommodating 150 passengers, had been initiated as far back as the late-1970s. Although no definitive aircraft program had, in the event, been launched, detailed market analysis, along with new technological research, would later prove valuable to the eventual design. The 60 orders for the KC-10 had enabled Douglas to maintain the basic DC-10 production line longer than it would have if it had only relied on commercial orders, thus delaying the need for a replacement. Yet, because it would be based upon its earlier-generation counterpart, it could proceed through its definition and design phase far more rapidly than the later, competing Airbus A-340 and Boeing 777, entering the market earlier than these aircraft and tapping into an existing DC-10 customer base for potential sales.

Unlike that aircraft, however--whose five basic versions had shared the same fuselage length and cross-section--the projected successor of 1979 had featured a 40-foot fuselage stretch capable of accommodating 340 mixed-class passengers, three General Electric CF6-50J turbofans producing 54,000 pounds of thrust each, a strengthened wing, and a 630,000-pound gross weight.

The resultant DC-10-60, paralleling the earlier, stretched, long-range DC-8-60 series, had offered a 75-passenger increase over the DC-10s of Air New Zealand and Swissair who had been targeted as potential launch customers, but use of the existing wing had severely eroded performance, and five-foot extensions, coupled with a new wing fillet and active ailerons to reduce gust loads, had considerably improved it. Indeed, revised trailing edge flaps and a larger tailcone had resulted in a 24-percent fuel reduction over that of the DC-10 and its seat-mile costs had been lower than those of the four-engined Boeing 747.

Program launch, intended for 1979, had been usurped by Douglas's further definition of its versions, which, designated "DC-10-61," "DC-10-62," and "DC-10-63," had even more closely reflected the DC-8-61, DC-8-62, and DC-8-63 nomenclatures. The DC-10-61, for instance, had been intended as a domestic variant with the 40-foot fuselage stretch and a 390-passenger capacity, and had been powered by 60,000 thrust-pound engines. The DC-10-62, with a reduced, 26.7-foot fuselage insertion, had been intended for very long-range operations, with a 14-foot wingspan increase, active ailerons, and a four-wheeled centerline main undercarriage unit. It had been intended to carry some 40 fewer passengers than the -61, while the -63 had combined the design features of both, resulting in a high-capacity, long-range variant.

A series of intermittent DC-10 accidents, none of which had been traced to an inherent design flaw, along with the prevailing economic recession, had precluded further Super DC-10 development at this time, although one of its features, eventually incorporated in its successor, had been flight-tested on a Continental Airlines DC-10-10 in August of 1981. Winglets, extending both above and below the wing tip, and varying in size, had resulted in a three-percent fuel reduction because of an equal decrease in generated drag.

Thus buoyed only by MD-80 sales, the Douglas Aircraft Company rode the recession. A projected DC-10 replacement, bearing an MD-11X-10 designation in 1984 and offering considerably more advancement than the original Super 60 series had, had been most closely based on the DC-10-30 with a 580,000-pound maximum take off weight, a 6,500-nautical mile range with a full payload, and either three General Electric CF6-80C2 or Pratt and Whitney PW4000 engines. A higher-capacity version, to be offered in parallel with the basic airframe, had featured a 22.3-foot fuselage stretch, to permit 331 mixed-class passengers to be carried over 6,000-mile ranges and had a corresponding 590,000-pound gross weight. American, Delta, Lufthansa, and Toa Domestic Airlines, considering this iteration, had suggested refinements which had later been incorporated in the definitive aircraft.

By the following year, the board authorized order solicitations, although both versions had, by this time, featured the same fuselage length, the medium-range variant, at a 500,000-pound gross weight, offering a 4,781-mile range, and the long-range counterpart, at a 590,000-pound gross weight, offering a 6,900-mile range. Accommodating some 335 passengers in a typically mixed arrangement, they introduced composite construction, a two-person cockpit, and an advanced electronic flight system.

At the time of official program launch, which had occurred on December 30, 1986, 92 orders and options had been placed by Alitalia, British Caledonian, Federal Express, Korean Air, SAS, Swissair, Thai Airways International, and Varig.

The MD-11, which had rolled out for the first time some three years later in September of 1989 in Long Beach, California, and had been registered N111MD, had been devoid of its engines, winglets, vertical stabilizer, and paint scheme, but displayed the logos of the 29 customers which had ordered or optioned the type by this time. As these surfaces had subsequently been added, however, it bore a close similarity to the DC-10-30 from which it had been derived.

Featuring an 18.6-foot stretch over that aircraft, attained by means of two fuselage plugs, it retained its nose and cockpit sections, but introduced an elongated, drag-reducing, chisel-shaped tailcone, and offered a 201.4-foot overall length when fitted with General Electric engines, or a 200.11-foot overall length with Pratt and Whitney powerplants.

The two-spar Douglas airfoil, built up of chordwise ribs and skins and spanwise stiffeners, featured a 169.6-foot span, a 35-degree sweepback at the quarter chord, and six degrees of dihedral, rendering a 7.9 aspect ratio and a 3,648-square-foot area. Low-speed lift was augmented by new, full-span leading edge slats and redesigned, double-slotted trailing edge flaps, while roll control was provided by inboard, all-speed ailerons made of metal with composite skins, and outboard, low-speed ailerons which drooped with the trailing edge flaps during take off and were entirely constructed of composite material. Each wing also contained five spoiler panels.

Fuel, carried in wing integral tanks, totaled 40,183 US gallons.

Up- and downward-extending winglets, installed on the wingtips themselves, had provided the greatest distinction to the DC-10. Harnessing the drag-producing vortex otherwise created by wingtip pressure differential intermixing, they had been comprised of a seven-foot, upward-angled section made of a conventional rib and spar, but covered with an aluminum alloy skin and completed by a carbonfibre trailing edge, and a 2.5-foot, downward-angled section made entirely of carbonfibre, collectively encompassing a 40-square-foot area.

Because of the increased moment-arm and computer-controlled longitudinal stability augmentation software, the MD-11's horizontal tail had been 30 percent smaller than that of the DC-10 and featured a 2,000 US gallon integral trim tank which increased range and facilitated in-flight center-of-gravity optimization. Its advanced, cambered airfoil, and reduced, 33-degree sweepback, coupled with an electromechanically-activated variable incidence tailplane fitted with two-section, slotted, composite trailing edge elevators on either side, resulted in a 1,900-pound structural weight reduction and decreased in-flight drag.

Power had been provided by three 62,000 thrust-pound General Electric CF6-80C2 or 60,000 thrust-pound Pratt and Whitney PW4462 high bypass ratio turbofans, two of which had been pylon-attached to the wing leading edge underside and one of which had been installed in the vertical tail aft of the fin torsion box. Tracing its origins to the 41,000 thrust-pound TF39 engine originally developed for the Lockheed C-5A galaxy, the former had evolved into the quieter, more advanced CF-6 intended for commercial operation, and its 40,000 thrust-pound CF6-6D had powered the domestic DC-10-10, while its 48,000 thrust-pound CF6-50C had powered the intercontinental DC-10-30, along with the Airbus A-300 and some versions of the Boeing 747. The even more advanced CF6-80A had also been chosen to power the A-310 and the 767.

Incorporating the CF-6's core, with a larger, 93-inch, two-shaft fan, the CF6-80C2 powering the MD-11 had offered 17-percent more thrust and had a bypass ratio of 5.05. Linked to a full authority digital engine control system, which itself had provided electronic autothrottle and flight management system interface, the turbofan had offered reduced fuel burn.

The alternative Pratt and Whitney PW4060, whose reduced length equally decreased the aircraft's overall length by five inches, had been the only other customer option. The Rolls Royce RB.211-524L Trent, briefly listed as a third alternative, had been specified by Air Europe for its 18 firm and optioned orders, but the financial collapse of its parent company had precluded its continued offering.

The hydraulically-actuated, tricycle undercarriage, like that of the DC-10-30, had been comprised of a twin-wheeled, forward-retracting nose unit; two quad-wheeled, laterally retracting main gear bogies; and a twin-wheeled, forward-retracting, fuselage centerline strut, all of which had featured oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers.

The MD-11 cockpit, significantly deviating from the DC-10's, had been operated by a two-person crew, the third, or flight engineer, position replaced by digital avionics and computerized flight control and management systems, while the Aircraft System Control, or ASU, had been comprised of five independent, dual-channel computers which automated all of his previous functions.

The passenger cabin, designed for flexibility, had incorporated seat, galley, lavatory, and garment closet installation on cabin length-running tracks whose one-inch increments facilitated multiple configurations and densities and rapid rearrangements, thus permitting carriers to operate the type on scheduled flights during the week and on high-density/charter services during weekends. Compared to the DC-10 cabin, the MD-11 featured light-weight side panels and seat assemblies; improved lighting; larger, restyled overhead storage compartments which tripled the per-passenger volume to three cubic feet; standard centerline bins aft of the second door; and provision for overhead crew rest beds.

A typical two-class, 323-passenger configuration had entailed 34 six-abreast first class seats at a 41- to 42-inch pitch and 289 nine-abreast economy class seats at a 33- to 34-inch pitch, while a three-class arrangement had included 16 six-abreast first class seats at a 60-inch pitch, 56 seven-abreast business class seats at a 38-inch pitch, and 221 nine-abreast economy class seats at a 32-inch pitch. Maximum capacity, in a ten-abreast, three-four-three configuration, had been 409.

The MD-11, with a 114,100-pound weight-limited payload, had a 602,500-pound maximum take off weight. Accommodating 298 three-class passengers, it had offered a 6,840-nautical mile range, including FAA-required reserves.

First taking to the skies on January 10, 1990 from Long Beach, the MD-11 had performed stability and control tests over Edwards Air Force Base, achieving a maximum altitude of 25,000 feet and a 300-knot speed before concluding a highly successful two-hour, 56-minute maiden flight. Three hundred fifteen orders and options had been received for the type by this time.

The certification program, which had entailed four General Electric CF6-80C2 and one Pratt and Whitney PW4460 powered airframe, had notched up several commercial tri-jet records, including a 9,080-mile flight from Anchorage, Alaska, on July 31, 1990, with the fourth prototype, which had remained aloft for 16 hours, 35 minutes.

Type certification had been achieved on November 8 for the CF6-80C2-powered version and December 19 for the PW4460 aircraft, while clearance had been given for Category IIIB landings the following April.

Finnair, the type's launch customer, had taken delivery of its first aircraft, registered OH-LGA, at a ceremony in Long Beach on November 29, 1990, and a representative intercontinental sector with this aircraft had been made two years later, in October of 1992.

Founded on November 1, 1923 by Bruno L. Lucander, the private carrier, then designated "Aero O/Y," had inaugurated service the following March to Reval, Estonia, with Junkers F.13 aircraft, before expanding to Stockholm, with an intermediate stop in Turku, in cooperation with Sweden's ABA. Finnish domestic route development, because of the country's profusion of lakes, had necessitated floatplane equipment, although post-1936 airport construction had enabled it to acquire two de Havilland Rapide Dragon biplanes and, later, two Junkers Ju.52/3ms.

Shortly after World War II-mandated flight suspension had been lifted, the fledgling airline, now 70-percent government owned and renamed "Aero O/Y Finish Air Lines," had reestablished its Helsinki-Stockholm sector and acquired nine DC-3s.

The 1950s, characterized by continental route system expansion and modern, Convair 340 aircraft acquisitions, had taken it to Dusseldorf, Hamburg, London, and Moscow from a steadily expanding Helsinki flight hub, and the type had been superseded by the slightly higher-capacity Convair 440.

The MD-11, powered by General Electric CF6-80C2D1F engines and configured for 58 business class and 278 economy class passengers, had been ordered to replace its DC-10-30s, and had first been deployed on the Helsinki-Tenerife route on December 29, 1990, to amass initial operating experience before being transferred to the North American and Far Eastern sectors for which it had been intended.

Its two MD-11s had operated the Helsinki-Tokyo and Helsinki-Bangkok-Singapore routes, while its DC-10-30s had continued to serve the New York and Beijing sectors.

The first, to Japan, had spanned 4,862 miles and had entailed a nine-hour, 35-minute block time, and had been operated by the first MD-11 to enter passenger-carrying service, OH-LGA.

The tall, dense trees surrounding Helsinki's Vantaa International Airport, still wearing their yellow and gold autumn coats, appeared diffused as the biting, 30-degree wind whirled snow flurries toward the geometric pattern of ramps, taxiways, and runways. The goliath, blue-trimmed Finnair MD-11 tri-jet, currently the only widebody on the white-dusted tarmac accompanied by a myriad of narrow body DC-9, MD-80, and 737-300 twinjets, was towed to Gate A-4 30 minutes before its scheduled, 1620 departure time amid the late-afternoon, diminished Nordic light.

The MD-11's two-person cockpit, a radical departure from the DC-10's, sported six eight-square-inch Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) glass display units, comprised of the duplicated Primary Flight Display (PFD), Navigation Display (ND), Engine and Alert Display (EAD), and Systems Display (SD) schematics, while the Automatic System Controllers, located on the overhead panel, were subdivided into sections for hydraulics, electrical, pneumatics, and fuel, each controlled by two independent computers. The Flight Control Panel (FCP) itself, located on the Glareshield Control Panel (GCP), featured controls for autopilot and flight director mode selections, as well as flight management system mode change controls, inclusive of speed (SPD), navigation (NAV), and profile (PROF).

The pending, trans-Siberian flight's departure and destination points, weights, moments, flight plan, take off runway (04), and take off performance calculations, obtained from the station-prepared load sheet, had been entered into the keypad-resembling Multifunction Control Display Unit (MCDU) located on the center pedestal between the two pilots. The flight's Standard Instrument Departure (SID) had subsequently been loaded into the flight management system during inertial reference system initialization.

The number three engine, the first to be started and the furthest from the bleed air source, had been engaged by pulling the Engine Start Switch, its start valve moving into the open position, as verified by an amber confirmation light. When the N2 compressor speed had equaled 15 percent, the start lever had been moved to the "On" position and the engine start switch, reflecting an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) of between 45- and 52-percent, had popped in, the start valve now closed and the amber light disilluminating. The engine's N1 tachometer had settled at 23-percent and its exhaust gas temperature had hovered at the 700 degree Fahrenheit mark. The sequence had then been repeated for the other two turbofans, followed by completion of the "After Start Checklist."

Tug-maneuvered from its nosed-in parking position, the MD-11, operating as Flight AY 914, had initiated its autonomous movement with an almost imperceptible throttle advancement, testing its flight surfaces and following Vantaa Ground Control taxi instructions.

Navigating the snow-patched, blue light-lined taxiways in virtual darkness, the lumbering tri-jet made a 180-degree turn on to Runway 04 with the aid of its nose wheel steering tiller, the nose wheel itself positioned so far behind the cockpit that the aircraft had been inched well beyond the strip's centerline before it had actually initiated the turn toward it, its elongated, wide fuselage following it in trailing mode. Full rudder deflection provided ten degrees of steering on the ground, while the nose wheel achieved up to 70 percent of left and right laterability.

Receiving take off clearance, the MD-11, sporting 25 degrees of trailing edge flap, had thundered into initial acceleration as its throttles, manually advanced to the 70-percent position, nourished its huge-diameter General Electric turbofans with a steady stream of fuel, as they swallowed massive quantities of cold air with each, increasingly faster fan rotation. The AUTOPILOT button, located on the Flight Control Panel and engaging the autothrottles themselves, computer-controlled the aircraft into its proper take off thrust setting, coupled with automatic engine synchronization.

Elevator-leveraged into a nosewheel-disengaging rotation, the tri-jet surrendered to the purple, snowflake-blurring dusk, its heavy fuel load exerting a wingtip-curving bending load and its wing leading edge light beams slicing through the obscurity as it climbed out over Runway 15 and the ground light splotches representing Helsinki. Retracting its tricycle undercarriage, the aircraft, whose pitch bars had indicated its correct climb attitude, had automatically adhered to its standard instrument departure course.

Arcing into a shallow right bank over the coast, Flight 914 retracted its trailing edge flaps, although its leading edge slats had remained extended until additional speed had been amassed. Engaging the navigation mode enabled the aircraft to fly its departure profile, while activating the autoflight system, coupled with the "NAV" and "PROF" buttons, ensured that it followed its route, climb, outbound radial, and either air traffic control-assigned or level-off altitude. Airspeed had been maintained at 250 knots below 10,000 feet, at which time it had been permitted to accelerate to 355 or beyond, and its leading edge lights had been retracted.

Surmounting one of many cloud decks, the aircraft crossed the Gulf of Finland, whose dark purple surface had been separated from the horizon by a diffused band of chartreuse light. Increasingly encased in howling slipstream, it passed over the coast of the former Soviet Union at a 472-knot ground speed, flying southwest of St. Petersburg in black skies which had been traced by a thin, glowing orange line on its western horizon, now located behind its left wingtip, as it settled into its initial, 33,000-foot plateau at a 509-knot ground speed, destined for the Ural Mountains and Siberia.

The passenger cabin, sporting diagonal-patterned, light and dark blue upholstery, had featured six rows of seven-abreast, two-three-two, configured business class seats in the forward section, followed by another three aft of the second cross aisle. Economy class seating, entirely in a ten-abreast, three-four-three, arrangement, had included nine rows behind the business class, and 21 in the aft cabin, running between the third and fourth cross aisles.

Dinner in the latter, according to its bilingual English and Japanese menu (which, in October of 1992, had ironically featured an in-flight profile of one of Finnair's DC-10-30s), had included a selection of aperitifs, beer, wine, and nonalcoholic beverages served with lightly salted peanuts and smoked almonds; a crabmeat and mushroom seafood salad on a lettuce bed with jumbo shrimp, sliced cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes; a basket of hot white and wheat rolls with Finnish butter; mango beef or chicken in curry-coconut cream sauce; French camembert cheese with crispy rye crackers; raspberry mousse cake; coffee or Japanese tea; a selection of liqueurs; after-dinner mints; and hot towels.

Maintaining a 567-knot ground speed, the MD-11 penetrated the minus 62-egree tropopause at a three-degree nose-high attitude, passing southeast of Arkhangelsk over the frozen Siberian tundra, with seven hours, 30 minutes remaining on its flight plan. Thinning cloud layer, appearing like sheathing veils, revealed periodic orange and white, population center-represented pearls steadily moving beneath the protruding, massive-diameter turbofans as they propelled it toward Adak and thence south of Naryan-Mar.

Oblivious o the passengers, the upper and lower winglets delayed the otherwise vortex-created wingtip pressure differential intermixing, reducing drag, while the horizontal stabilizer-located trim tank had enabled the aircraft to shift its center-of-gravity rearward, toward its 34-percent aft design limit, further reducing drag and coincident fuel burn by 2.7 percent. The type had standardly operated within a 29- to 32-percent range.

Flight 914's flight plan progress, indicated by a series of position and ground speed readings, had been the result of the IRU's position and velocity coordination with VHF omni-directional radio range (VOR) and distance measuring equipment (DME) stations between Finland and Japan. The Flight Plan (F-PLN) display selected on the MCDU yielded the aircraft's position and waypoints aligned in a vertical manner on the screen, with the estimated times beside them, along with speed and altitude, listed as "Position," "Estimated Time Overhead" (ETO), "Speed" (SPD), and "Flight Level" (ALT).

Passing over Irkutsk, the Yabblonovyy Mountain Range, and Tsitisihar, the aircraft moved ever eastward, toward Vladivostock.

Slicing the darkness and opening day in the Orient, dawn's razor pierced the eastern horizon with a thin cut through which an orange glow had poured ahead of the port wing, somehow emphasizing the cylindrical nature of the planet over which the tri-jet presently arced. "Tomorrow," seemingly eager to unleash its force, streamed through the gradually-enlarging fissure marking the demarcation line between the 24-hour cycle's two modes, its light intensifying and transforming the black, nocturnal doom of Siberia into a cold, partially habitable purple and ultimate dark, pre-dawn blue. The amount of humanity awakening to such light below in the vast wasteland had undoubtedly been infinitesimal. The sun, appearing a red, liquid mercury immersed in a gray-black sea, slowly triumphed over night, its upper, head-like rim becoming distinguishable as it shyly revealed the rest of its body, illuminating the ice-capped, corrugated crust of the Russian mountains covering the area immediately below the fuselage. Initially seeming to float in a dark-brown sea, they became independently distinguishable as the sun stretched its floodlighting rays, like pointing limbs, toward them.

Passing over snaking, copper-reflecting rivers, Flight 914 consumed the two hours, 11 minutes remaining on its flight plan.

Aromas of brewing coffee enticed the groggy, mostly-sleeping passengers from nocturnal slumber in the cabin, a process only partially augmented by breakfast-precedent hot, perfumed towels. The meal itself had included orange juice, a three-egg omelet filled with creamed spinach, thick slices of Danish ham, assorted rolls, Swiss black cherry preserves, Finnish cheese spread fondue, cream wafers, and coffee or tea.

Banking on to a southeasterly heading with the aid of its inboard ailerons, the MD-11 had, after virtually the duration of its cruise, departed Soviet air space for the first time over snow-dusted, chocolate-brown ridges whose peaks had been gently grazed by funnels of vapory mist, following them to the coast and the morning sun-reflected, copper surface of the Sea of Japan. One hour, 23 minutes had remained to Tokyo.

Motionlessly suspended above the water's glass-like surface, it cruised past the silver peak of Mount Fuji, now maintaining an almost due south, 180-degree heading. Banking left over cumulous patches, it forged its final link to Japan, with its time-to-destination having unwound to the 40-minute mark.

The ridges defining Honshu Island appeared ahead.

Tokyo had been reporting clear skies and 20-degree Celsius temperatures.

Traversing the coast over Niigata, the MD-11 had reached a position directly northwest of its destination, with 25 minutes remaining on its flight plan, disengaging itself from its aerial plateau for the first time in almost nine hours by means of the cockpit-selected "NAV" and "PROF" modes.

Induced into a nose-down, slipstream-increasing descent profile, Flight 914 traced the coastline before briefly passing out over the whitecapped Pacific, now ATC-vectored into a series of three right banks. Automatically guided, the aircraft reduced speed to 250 knots as it had transited the 10,000-foot speed restriction, adhering to its Standard Terminal Arrival Route (STAR), propelled by its three massive turbofans whose N1 tachometers had registered almost-stationary, 34-percent readings.

An air traffic control-requested speed reduction, to 200 knots, had, according to the speed tape, required an initial trailing edge flap extension, to 15 degrees.

As the aircraft had sank over brown, tan, and green geometric-patterned farmland on its final approach heading of 340 degrees, the captain had selected the Approach/Land tile, the autoland system armed for an instrument landing system (ILS) approach and poised to capture the glideslope and localizer. The Approach page of the MCDU, yielding landing weight, runway, barometric pressure, and final flap setting speed readings, listed the following for RJAA, the ICAO four-letter code for Tokyo-Narita: a 208-knot "clean" speed, a 158-knot flap extension speed to the 28-degree position, a 161-knot approach speed with 35 degrees of flap, a 158-knot V-reference speed, and a 150-knot touchdown speed.

Sporting significantly increased wing area with leading edge slat and 35 degrees of trailing edge flap extensions, the blue-trimmed Finnair MD-11, projecting its tricycle undercarriage like four outstretched claws, conducted its final approach over the Narita suburbs in the flawlessly-blue morning, passing over the runway threshold. Sinking toward the concrete, during which time altitude calls had been computer-generated, the widebody tri-jet had been pitched into a seven-degree, nose-high flare, retarding its authothrottle to idle at 50 feet and permitting ground effect to cushion its main gear contact. Manually throttled into its reverse thrust mode, it had unleashed its upper wing surface spoilers, their handle having been moved from the retract (RET) setting through the "1/3," "2/3," and "FULL" marks as the aircraft decelerated. The nosewheel thudded on to the ground.

Taxiing to Satellite Four of Narita International Airport's South Wing, the aircraft moved into its Gate 44 parking position at 0855, local time, ending its intercontinental flight sector and completing the circular pattern of nosed-in widebody airliners comprised of an Austrian Airlines A-310-300, a Japan Air Lines 747-200B, a British Airways 747-400, an ANA 747-200B, a Northwest 747-200B, and a Swissair MD-11.

Initial MD-11 service had not always been so routine. Indeed, the aircraft had demonstrated gross weight and drag increases far in excess of performance projections, resulting in payload and range deficiencies, and Robert Crandall, then American Airlines' CEO, had refused to take delivery of the type, substituting an existing DC-10-30 on the San Jose-Tokyo route for which it had been intended. A series of performance improvement packages (PIP), targeting the shortcomings, had ultimately remedied the situation.

By January 1, 1996, 147 MD-11s had been delivered to 24 original customers and operators who had collectively engaged the aircraft in an 11.6-hour daily utilization, experiencing a 98.3-percent dispatch reliability.

Aside from the initial passenger MD-11, several other versions, although in very limited quantities, had been produced.

The MD-11 Combi, for example, had featured an aft, left, upward-opening freight door, permitting various percentages of passengers, from 168 to 240, and cargo, ranging from four to ten pallets, to be carried on the main deck, while lower-deck space had remained unchanged. With a 144,900-pound weight-limited payload, the aircraft had a maximum range of between 5,180 and 6,860 nautical miles.

The MD-11CF Convertible Freighter had featured the main deck door relocated to the forward, port side. Martinair Holland, launch customer for the variant in August of 1991, had placed four firm orders and one option for the type.

The MD-11F, with a 202,100-pound payload, had been a pure-freighter without passenger windows or internal facilities ordered by FedEx, while the MD-11ER Extended Range, launched in February of 1994, had featured a 3,000 US gallon fuel capacity increase carried in lower-deck auxiliary tanks, a 6,000-pound higher payload, a 480-mile greater range, and a new maximum take off weight of 630,500 pounds. World Airways, selecting the Pratt and Whitney PW4462 engine, and Garuda Indonesia, specifying its General Electric CF6-80C2 counterpart, had placed the launch orders.

Dwindling sales, the result of the design's initial performance deficiencies, American Airlines' reputation-damaging public criticisms, order cancellations, and competition from the Airbus A-340 and Boeing 777, had forced McDonnell-Douglas to write down $1.8 million for the program in 1996 and by the following year, after McDonnell-Douglas's merger with the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, it had no longer been feasible to continue its production. The original Douglas Aircraft Company Building 84, located at Long Beach Airport and incubation point for all McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 and MD-11 widebody tri-jets, had hatched its 200th and last MD-11, a freighter, for Lufthansa Cargo, in June of 2000, and the aircraft, towed across the road to the runway, bore the title, "The perfect end to a perfect era."

The complete production run had included 131 MD-11P Passenger versions, five MD-11C Combis, six MD-11CF Convertible Freighters, 53 MD-11F Pure-Freighters, and five MD-11ER Extended Range variants.

The figures, added to the 446 DC-10s built between 1971 and 1988, had resulted in a total of 646 tri-jets having been produced.

Although McDonnell-Douglas had studied several stretched, re-engined, and rewinged MD-11 successors designated "MD-12s," including a double-decked, quad-engined, A-380-resembling configuration, these ambitious proposals had exceeded the value of the manufacturer itself, and when Taiwan Aerospace had withdrawn financial support for the definitive version, which had reverted to a tri-jet design with an advanced wing, the three-engined widebody, tracing its lineage to the original DC-10, had finally ended, leaving the increasing number of passenger-converted airframes into freighters to carry their pedigrees into the early-21st century.

What to Pack For a Cruise Vacation

A cruise vacation is all about relaxation, luxury and adventure. However, before you actually arrive at the ship there are dozens of details to iron out. First and foremost you need to decide upon your itinerary. Which area of the world do you want to see? Which ports of call will you visit? What shore excursions will you take? Once this has been decided then you need to figure out what cruise line you want to book with. With more than 2 dozen major cruise lines worldwide this also be a decision that takes a lot of research. And, of course, you cannot forget about setting a budget for your trip. The money you have available to you will have a drastic impact on where you go and what you do on your vacation.

With all these major considerations, deciding what to pack for a cruise can seem like nothing more than an afterthought. However, if you want your cruise to be as stress-free as possible then you need to put some thought into what you are going to bring ahead of time, rather than just cramming everything you own into a suitcase the night before you are supposed to leave.

First of all, you want to make sure your travel documentation is in order. Gather your cruise line tickets, airline tickets, passports, medical prescriptions, insurance papers, and any other pertinent documents together and make multiple photocopies of them. You should leave a copy at home with a friend or relative, so they can fax them to you if necessary. Also, make sure you have a photocopied set in both your carry-on and your stowed luggage. With these backups in place you should be covered in the event something is lost or stolen.

Secondly, you'll want to plan your wardrobe ahead of time. What kind of cruise are you going on? Is it highly luxurious, where every dinner is a formal affair? You'll need suits and ties for the gentlemen and evening gowns for the ladies. However, if it is more fun and adventure than stuffy formality then you can obviously get away with more casual clothing. Destination and time of year will play a large role as well. Obviously a winter cruise in the Baltic Sea will require a much different wardrobe than a summer voyage in the Mediterranean. Even if you are traveling in summer though, be sure to take at least one set of warm clothes. There is always the possibility of bad weather and wet and shivering is no way to spend your luxury vacation.

Most importantly, make sure to avoid overpacking. Airlines have strict restrictions on extra or overweight bags, and you can find yourself paying a stiff premium if you don't stay within their limits. Bring outfits that you can mix and match. You can wear the same blouse or shirt with a different skirt or pants. Bring lightweight scarves or jewelry to accessorize. By providing yourself some flexibility you can significantly reduce the amount of clothing you need to bring with you. Don't forget too that most cruise lines offer a laundry service, so you don't have to worry about running out of clean clothes.

When going on a cruise, packing can be a slightly stressful but fun chore. You might be worrying about remembering everything? If you forget something, chances are you can buy it on the ship. The cruise lines are more then happy to sell you those little things you forgot...for an inflated price of course. That disposable underwater camera that you could buy on sale at home, might cost you up to three times that price on the ship, or in port. So well ahead of the cruise, I prepare a list of things I want to bring. The list can be modified and reused for the next cruise. Then as I am packing things into the suitcases, I place a little checkmark on the list to show I packed that particular item.

This was the start of my trip to Dallas Fort Worth to visit the American Airlines flight academy. Sorry for the angle in the vid, usually when I record these flight videos I'm not looking at the camera, in order to hide the camera from flight attendants and so forth I just hold it next to my shoulder and hope for the best. So any comments on any of my videos about angles will receive a harsh comment about not reading info. Hope you enjoy the video because I enjoyed making it, though I wish it was better and clearer. I was going to make the video longer but when we got to the Alaska Airlines terminal we had to wait for about 10 minutes because we got there a little early also two 747s were pushing back from their gates and a A319 for Mexicana was parking at the gate, so it took some time.

China is a warm and hospitable country with friendly people. Though the Chinese people welcome foreigners with open arms, they are also easily offended if a tourist misbehaves. Etiquette is a part of the Chinese culture and a foreigner is expected to show respect to the people and the country.

As mentioned above Chinese are friendly people, smile whenever someone smiles at you. Chinese people love to befriend foreigners as for them it is an opportunity to get acquainted to new people and languages and also to improve their English. It is better to make friends with the locals and ask for directions then simply wandering about the streets clueless. Tourists are a common sight in the big cities and smaller cities do not get many foreigners that is why the inhabitants of smaller towns often stare at foreigners but this is simply out of curiosity; they mean no harm. Don't stare back at them with hostility as it generates negative feelings.

In China, people greet each other by shaking hands. The handshake should be accompanied with a nod if you are greeting an elder. The handshake should be gentle and if the person is very happy to see you, he/she will cover the handshake with his left hand. Do not display your emotions publicly in China by kissing or hugging. It is considered bad manners.

In China try to understand and follow the rules as much as you can. Chinese do not make exceptions if you do not follow the rules; also do not yell at anyone especially the locals.

Chinese people are extremely proud of their culture and language and you will not come across many who speak English. To overcome the language barrier, buy a phrasebook; better still take a visiting card of the shops and other places you intend to visit again so that you do not have to explain to the taxi driver where you want to go.

Chinese people love receiving and giving gifts but a person who readily accepts gifts is considered greedy. If a Chinese person refuses your gifts at first, do not be offended, it is polite to refuse the gift two or three times before finally accepting it. Also do not open the gift in front of the person, it is considered bad manners.

Though a Chinese expects you to be unaware of the use of chopsticks, do not place chopsticks in a bowl as it is extremely impolite. Tapping the bowl with chopsticks is also against manners. Also if you want to eat rice, ask for it because rice is usually served towards the end of the meal.

We've all seen them. The entrances are as unobtrusive as possible while still letting members know where they are. The names are regal, invoking red carpets, crowns, and other images of pomp and circumstance. From time to time, the doors slide open so people can walk in or out. But for most of us, that view from the outside is all that we see of the members-only airport lounge.

Tens of thousands of people belong to one or more airport lounge network in the United States alone, and the numbers increase dramatically outside America's borders. For those who diligently pay their annual members (which may be as high as $400 or more), access to an airport lounge is well worth the price.

Then again, there are millions of people who don't belong to an airport lounge. They sit in the terminal, patiently waiting for their flights, and don't seem any worse for the experience. But have they weighed the options and decided the lounge membership wasn't worth the price--or did they just not have enough information to even consider joining?

Like most questions, the answer depends on the person. Let's start with some information on what an airport lounge (or "club") is and what services it offers.

Each of the seven "legacy" airlines in the United States--that is, the ones that remain from the days of regulation, which are American, United, Delta, U.S. Airways, Northwest, Continental, and Alaska Air--has its own lounges. Major overseas airlines also have their own lounges, and there are several networks of affiliate lounges that belong to airports rather than specific airlines. None of the domestic low-cost carriers, such as JetBlue or Southwest, operates a lounge network.

To get into an airport lounge, you need to meet one of several criteria that make you eligible:

Members are always welcome.
Airlines that belong to the same alliance (Star Alliance, oneworld, SkyTeam) or have specific partner agreements may allow members of their partners' lounges to use theirs as well.
International passengers traveling in Business or First Class (but not domestic First Class passengers) are typically given complimentary lounge access.
Some airlines grant complimentary access to top-level elite members of their frequent flyer programs.
American Express Platinum cardholders are given complimentary access to some airlines' lounges when traveling with those airlines.
You may be able to purchase a day pass upon request.
Inside a lounge, you'll find a quiet business atmosphere with comfortable chairs, tables, and desk space for laptops. Whenever possible, lounges are built with interesting views. There's usually wireless Internet access; some clubs make it complimentary, while others charge a nominal fee. The same is true for bar service, though a bar is almost always present. You'll typically find at least one television, magazines and newspapers. Snacks, coffee, and non-alcoholic drinks are always complimentary.

Airport lounges also offer their members access to private ticketing agents who can process requests for upgrades and seat assignments, make changes to reservations, and handle other services. In keeping with the standard model of giving the best service to the most important customers, airlines tend to put senior-level staff into their lounges, which can be a real benefit if a flight is cancelled or you need to make complex last-minute changes.

Great--but as we mentioned earlier, outright membership in an airport lounge system may cost as much as $400 or more per year. So, is it worth it?

Maybe. If you travel often, and particularly if you travel overseas or have a lot of layovers, belonging to an airport lounge can provide a very welcome place to collect your thoughts and recharge between flights. Something as simple as a friendly greeting, followed by a cup of coffee and a danish, may change the whole tone of a trip.

Frequent flyers who do most of their flying with a particular airline tend to have the most incentive to join their favorite airline's lounge (club). Elite members often get discounts on membership; some airlines let their elite members pay for their memberships with miles rather than dollars. If you fly often but don't use a particular airline, you may be better off with one of the airport-based networks--depending on which airports you use and whether participating lounges are available.

In the end, joining an airport lounge is a very personal decision. You're trading some form of currency, whether cash or miles or even brand loyalty, for an upgraded customer service experience. Whether the benefits outweigh the cost is something you'll need to decide for yourself. But whether you choose to be among the tens of thousands who sign up or the millions who don't, you can be comfortable with one thing: you made an informed decision that was right for you.

Alaska Air Flight 348 Emergency Landing

January 7, 2009 Alaska Airlines flight 348 delayed taking off due to mechanical issues. It finally took off 30 minutes later and after about 25 minutes of flying announced it would be turning around to go back to SeaTac due to an emergency. We had emergency clearence to land and received a fire engine escort back to the gate. It was supposed to be a 10 minute fix, but we ended up getting onto a new flight.

Tricks To Save Money On Board Your Next Cruise

Cruise lines love to discount their cruise fares just to get you on board their ship. They know that the vast majority of travelers will spend double their cruise fare with purchases on board the ship during the cruise. Just like the airlines, they stay up late at night dreaming up new ways to extract every possible dollar out of your pocket. Here's a guide to steps you can take to save considerable dollars by making smart spending decisions while enjoying your next cruise.

Let's talk drinks. This is a real money maker for cruise lines. Gone are the days when drinks were practically given away. Today wine, cocktails and specialty drinks will inflate your bill at a startling rate. But, with a little advanced planning you can lesson the hit. Most cruise lines allow you to bring bottled wine on board. I pack 4 bottles in the handy neoprene bottle totes you can find in almost any liquor or kitchen store (my choice is to pack 3 wines and one vodka). We each pack two bottles in the center of our suitcase - well buffeted by clothes.

Once on board the cruise ship, we enjoy sipping wine and cocktails in our cabin. We usually buy (or bring) an insulated travel mug and use that if we want to move around the ship with drink in hand. I fill up with juice at the breakfast buffet to mix later in the day with the vodka. My husband who enjoys a cold beer, has found that it's often less expensive to order a six pack from room service for the cabin refrigerator than to order beer from the bar. He brings along a zippered coozie in case he wants to tote the beer with him up on the deck.

A few words about drink passes. Most cruise lines will offer drink passes when you go through the check in process. It's important to do the math before purchasing a drink pass. Consider who many drinks you are likely to have in a day, and be sure to take into consideration how often you will be off the ship on excursions. I usually price my favorite cocktail, and then make a decision - usually bartenders and waiters can sell you a drink pass as well. If you're traveling with children, the soft drink pass is typically well worth the price. We also purchase some bottled water while on shore excursions and bring it back to the cabin.

Take advantage of the free shipboard cocktail hours. There's usually one on the first evening, on the dressy night, at the art show preview and several other times during the week. If you purchase wine at dinner and don't consume it all, ask your waiter to recork it for you to enjoy the next evening. Don't get razzle dazzled into the after diner shots - their just trying to pad your bill! If you want an after dinner drink - go enjoy one in one of the lounges or the casino.

Specialty Restaurants and private decks - aren't you paying enough already? If you want privacy, I recommend spending a bit more for a cabin with a balcony. That will also put you at a better table in the dining room. If you want to experience a specialty restaurant, wait a day or two and ask other passengers if the experience was worth it.

Shore Excursions - There are lots of resources for excursions, so be sure to do some comparison shopping. Pay a visit to your cruise line's website and check out their excursion offerings and their prices. Then visit some online excursion specialists; ShoreTrips.com, PortTrips.com, and Viator.com are some of the most popular. You also might want to check out cruise reviews at CruiseCritic.com. In many cruise ports (the Caribbean in particular) taxis will be lined up at the cruise dock to take you on private excursions. Make a friend or two and team up together to hire a private guide. MOST IMPORTANT is to arrive back at the cruise ship in plenty of time before sailing. It is your responsibility to be on time and they will leave without you!

Shopping - Check out the cruise gift shop and make a mental note of prices. You may find that some souvenir items are less expensive on board than in cruise ports. Keep a keen eye out each day in the news briefs for specials being offered. Remember the cruise lines are banking on the fact that you are a trapped audience and maybe a bit bored between activities and everything about the gift shop is set up to encourage impulse buys. I always ask myself, "how will this look in my drawer a few months from now - used or stuffed in the back?".

Casino - The odds of winning are far lower on cruise ships than in other major casinos. If you enjoy gambling, determine a pre-set amount you're comfortable loosing (because most of you will) and leave the floor when that money is gone. If you enjoy the atmosphere but don't want to gamble a lot - attend some of the card game lessons.

Technology - Don't turn on your cell phone on board the ship, wait until you are in port. Cell phone rates are often $3 or more per minute on board the ship! If you must be in constant contact (you ARE supposed to be on vacation) ask if they have an access package of pre-purchase minutes available for purchase at a lower price. The same applies to internet rates. Access an internet cafe, a local library, or business center at a hotel when you're onshore for lower prices.

Photos - The cruise lines count on the fact that it's very difficult to see your photo on the rack and walk away leaving it there. Make an agreement in advance not to purchase any picture unless YOU BOTH look maaaarvelous. When a cruise photographer snaps our picture, I hand over my digital camera and ask them to take a quick shot with our camera as well.

Art Auction - Just say no. You know in your heart that it's a gimmick, plus there will be shipping and a buyers premium - enough said.

Spa Treatments - Watch for specials during days at sea. You might have success doing a bit of haggling for mid-day treatments during days when most of the passengers on off the ship on shore excursions. And you don't need all those creams and detoxing agents - again they are counting on you being a captive audience where you can't do any comparison shopping.

Finally, relax and have a wonderful vacation. If you're nervous about how big your tab is becoming, just swing by the bursar's desk and ask them to subtotal your balance. Happy Cruising!

Imagine this: You live somewhere, anywhere, in the USA and on Saturday morning you and your partner set off to do some errands.

First, you stop at an Exxon station and gas up your car. Once again, your partner complains about the high cost of gas, and the outrageous profits of oil companies. But, you explain that California's public employees, among and millions of other working Americans, in every state, appreciate your business. The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) owns millions of ExxonMobil shares, and Exxon's corporate profits help pay for their pensions.

Next. you're off to Wal-Mart to pick up a couple of things for the garden and house. As you swipe your credit card to pay, California's public employees thank you again. Their retirement fund owns millions of Wal-Mart shares, and each time the company earns a profit on a sale to a customer, a portion of that flows to them.

Of course, the piece of the profit they get from your $20-dollar purchase would be miniscule. But, California public servants are getting an tiny bit from every one of the billions of purchases made at Wal-Mart, and they own millions of shares, so they end up with a sizable injection of Wal-Mart profits into their pension fund.

Next, you visit the travel agent, to finalize your vacation plans. After booking flights on Alaska Airlines, California's public employees thank you. They own shares in Alaska Air Group, which operates Alaska Airlines, and share in the corporate profits.

By now, you're feeling hungry; your partner suggests burgers at McDonald's. Would you be surprised to learn that California public employees own McDonald's shares as well, and share in the profits from McDonald's? Look in a recent annual report from CalPERS and you'll see it owned shares in exactly 4,656 American companies on June 30, 2007. The fund also holds millions of shares in companies in other countries, bonds (basically loans to corporations and governments), and other investments.

Here's another point that recently became one of public interest. As of June 30th, 2007, our public service friends in California owned almost a billion dollars worth of shares in American International Group, or AIG, the company that's in the news so much these days. If you've wondered for whom those supposedly greedy people at AIG were making big money, now you know - California public employees, along with millions and millions of other government and private sector members of pension plans and mutual funds. Assuming they still own a lot of AIG shares, all these working Californians have to hope the AIG survives - if not, it will mean a hit to their pension funds.

Now, you may not work for the State of California, you may not even live there. But, you're likely in the same boat, for better or for worse. Whether you live in the U.S.A., Australia, Chile, or a hundred other countries around the globe, your non-government retirement income depends in large part on corporate profits.

If you live in Canada, both your government pension and your non-government retirement income may be affected by corporate profits. A few years ago, the government agency that manages the government pension plan began investing in corporations to help fund the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security. So essentially all Canadians now depend, to a greater or lesser extent, on corporate profits for retirement money.

Maybe you don't belong to a pension plan, maybe you have to invest in mutual funds. Well, you're in the same boat. Regardless of country, your retirement income depends on corporate profits, and for two reasons. First, companies that make a profit can pay dividends to the owners, including those of us who contribute to pension funds and mutual funds. Second, shares in profitable companies may be sold for more than they cost, allowing pension funds and mutual funds to sell those shares for a capital gain (a capital gain is the difference between the price at which you buy a stock, and the higher price at which you sell it - if you sell it at a lower price, then you have a capital loss).

If you're trying to make sense of modern, middle-class capitalism, start by recognizing that most big corporations belong to working people, through their pension funds and mutual funds. Forget the old class warfare slogans, and the left wing bumper sticker logic. We workers are also owners in the world of modern capitalism, and addicted to corporate profits for much of our retirement incomes.

Both stun guns and pepper spray have become extremely popular self defense tools over the last few years and I am often asked about restrictions on traveling with these items. When I talked to representatives at both Amtrak and Greyhound they simply asked that these items be placed in your checked baggage. But seeing as how there really are no security checks before boarding a train or bus, this really is on the honor system. Commercial airlines however, are a different story. Even though both stun guns and pepper spray are legal in most states there are a few precautions that should be taken before you travel.

First, of all be sure to take a few minutes to check for restrictions on either product at your destination. Even though they are legal at you departure point, they will most likely be confiscated if your destination point does have restrictions.
Second, all commercial airlines have restrictions concerning travel with disabling devices or chemicals. Neither self defense sprays nor stun guns can be carried on your person or in your carryon luggage. You can however, place both items in your checked luggage. Pepper spray canisters cannot exceed a four ounce limit.
Third, check to be sure that your defensive spray canister has a locking device. This will insure that it will not accidentally discharge in your baggage while on the plane.
Fourth, be sure to tell the airlines that you have a stun gun or pepper spray canister in your checked luggage and that it is in a place where it can easily be located. They are obligated to check the pepper spray canister to be sure that it has a locking device.
The most important thing that I tell my customers when traveling with either product is not to try to conceal them. With the use of metal detectors and X-ray machines on commercial airlines, they will most likely be detected, even those canisters disguised as lipstick or other items.

The Los Angeles International Airport, more commonly referred to as LAX, is the biggest and busiest airport in California. With 59,494,539 passengers in 2008, LAX was ranked sixth busiest airport in the world that year by the Airports Council International. LAX is a hub for Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, Virgin America and others.

LAX takes up 3,500 acres of land near the Pacific Ocean and is located 15 miles southwest of downtown LA. Because of its proximity to the sea, LAX is known for getting occasional heavy fogs. The airport is a popular aircraft spotting location. People can sit at the Imperial Hill spot or the approach runways 24 L&R to watch low flying planes passing overhead.

History

LAX began as a small airfield in 1928. The LA City Council decided to build the field on 640 acres of land in south Westchester. The field was named Mine's Field, after the real estate agent who set up the purchase. The first building built on the airfield was Hangar No.1, in 1929. The Hangar is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1930, the airfield opened officially. In 1937 it became a municipal airfield, and after some expansions, it became the Los Angeles Airport in 1941. In 1949 its name was changed to the Los Angeles International Airport, or LAX. In the course of the next few years, it continued to expand westward. In 1953, an underground tunnel that let Sepulveda Blvd pass directly below the airport was completed to allow for expansion of the LAX runways.

In 1958, the large architectural firm Pereira & Luckman was hired to complete a major renovation of the airport that called for the construction of a system of massive airport terminals and parking structures, pulled together by a large, central dome. The dome idea was abandoned and replaced by the famous "Theme Building", which was completed in 1961 and designed by Pereira & Luckman architect Paul Williams.

Ground Transportation

Passengers who are driving and wish to park at LAX often call in advanced to reserve a parking spot. Parking at LAX can be notoriously difficult otherwise, especially during peak seasons. There are over 8,000 parking spots in eight different terminal parking structures. There are also remote Parking Lots B and C, located a few blocks away from the airport. Free shuttles take passengers from these lots to the airport and back. Passengers can also take the Metro Rail's Green Line train to the Aviation Station, from where another free shuttle can then take them to the airport terminals.

The successful implementation of a dying city - the Old Way

During a recent visit to the once thriving southwestern town of Tucumcari, New Mexico, located in Quay County on "Historic Route 66," I wondered how businesses were surviving there during this floundering economy, especially since the town had been sputtering towards failure for more than a decade. The universe answered my mindful inquiry by presenting this example of how one businesswoman was making it, while an elder businessman was not.

Once named "Six Shooter Siding," Tucumcari was founded in 1901 as a railroad construction camp. The 2000 census was 11 people short of reporting a population of 6000, but the count has since declined. The town occupies 7.5 square miles. Businesses in Tucumcari that exude a level of success are rare; they are few whose windows aren't barred or boarded up. The prominent ones are banks like Wells Fargo and Everyone's Federal Credit Union. (Yes, that is the credit union's actual name). Set apart, with its clean, almost modern Architecture, Mesalands Community College seems as if aliens had plopped down on a late night without the knowledge of the local population. [But I could only logically be equated with such an event in Roswell, New Mexico, far to the south.]

Along Main Street Tucumcari is "center", the company just before he said, "success" was Pajarito Interiors, owned and operated by Ruth Nelson, an interior designer who (pursuant to local news) is a graduate of 's University acquiredof Hawaii and moved to New Mexico from Oregon several years ago. Pajarito Interiors' Santa Fe adobe-style facade was clean, its paint fresh and stucco walls free of cracks. It had obviously been recently redesigned and updated compared to the buildings, up, down and across the street that sat in sad shape, windows boarded from vandal attacks, and having been long abandoned. An emaciated, feathery carcass of some now unidentifiable medium-sized bird-of-prey lay, splayed out in a display window where the raptor had accidentally flown in and failed in its escape. There it remained, in memoriam to its long suffering; for how long was anyone's guess. The building adjacent to Pajarito Interiors, connected by a shared wall was Sands-Dosey Drugstore. It had burned a year ago. Its partially scorched-black walls remained half standing, reminiscent of a bombed-out structure from a recent war no one had heard about. Its long history destroyed in what must have been a matter of hours.

Ruth Nelson's store is stocked with high-end home furnishing and decorator items. The interior walls hold a neutral hue that complements every other color found on unique, seemingly one-of-a-kind tables, sofas, chairs, and objects de arte . The ceiling lights softly light partitions that showcase special furnishings like a fashionably high table with a pair of plush-upholstered, matching chairs. In Tucumcari, with an estimated 80% of its population living on public assistance, it was an immediate Secret among locals who could afford such exquisite products.

Ruth Nelson said in an interview, he moved to Tucumcari, when they found a man with whom he thought he could spend the rest of their lives, the state as Donald Schutte, a lawyer and former district judge now. (After the originally appointed by the governor, Schutte had lost last November to win the election with his opponents almost two votes to one.) In the local news articles, and Nelson have expressed plans Schuttegreatly improve downtown Tucumcari as they have filled key roles in the "Main Street" initiative with its mission to "bring back Tucumcari." Nelson said her business was doing okay, but there was a time when she was realizing $7,000 to $10,000 in sales per week. That number sounded suspiciously exaggerated so I investigated further to find out the secret of how a businesswoman could be so successful in what appears to be a dying town. The answer came as a surprise.

In July, 2006, Ruth bought a home furnishings business from businessman Stanley Jennings. Stanley was 81 years old and thought it a good time to consider retiring. A veteran, and retired serviceman, Stanley was born in 1925 in his family's ranch house home in Quay, New Mexico, about 17 miles south of Tucumcari. He grew up there. Stan (as his friends call him) remembers as a child having just one shirt which his mother would quickly wash every night when he got home from school. She would iron it in the morning right before he left to attend a one room school house that was located on an adjacent ranch a couple of miles away. He would walk or ride a horse to get there. As a teenager, Stan was a "soda jerk" at Sands-Dorsey Drugstore whose abandoned business location was the bombed out building, previously noted. He served in the Army Air Corp as a P-51 fighter pilot in Alaska, and was once state President of New Mexico Young Democrats, a time he was being groomed to run for a higher, future office. He attended pharmacy school in Albuquerque but quit when he got a C in one class believing that it disqualified him to graduate. He didn't understand that is was a Grade Point Average (GPA) of a C or less that would have disqualified him. Unexpectedly, Stan's father died far too young, and left Stan's mother to cope with running a cattle ranch that was on the small side, as cattle ranches go. The ranch was encumbered with a large tax debt, as well. Stan accepted the responsibility, supporting his mother, wife and child.

Stan gave up pursuing ambitions outside of Tucumcari: the new, flourishing airline industry needed pilots, pharmacies were short-handed, and state level politics continued to beckon, but he kept busy on the home front. He was elected to the office of Quay County Assessor for several terms, continued on as a 4th generation rancher and founded a business in Tucumcari that he maintained for over 30 years. Tucumcari became home. He had married there; his only child had been born there. Janie, his wife, a school teacher who had taught for 26 years in Tucumcari, died there just short of their 50th wedding anniversary. Although now remarried, Stan has a burial place reserved beside Janie's "place of rest." He was an active member and held offices in the Kiwanis Club and currently holds the position of Chaplain in the local Masonic Lodge. Bottomline: Stan is a long-standing member of Tucumcari's history. A dedicated community leader, he did everything expected of, above and beyond, many of his friends and peers who have passed away over the years. Since selling his business at the age of 81, what has happened to Stan in his golden years, within this small community he's loved and served all his life ?

Now a jolly-round man with a quirky little smile, and friendly disposition, Stan owns and operates Fort Bascom Trading Post, where he is a seller of used odds and ends. At a glance, one would describe it as a southwest curio and junk store with a few interesting "pieces" scattered here and there. A private 45 rpm record "juke box" rumored to have belonged to movie star Grear Garson, a Bally's nickel slot machine, and a coin-operated orchestrian that plays a tune for a quarter. There are the numerous Model As in various states of disrepair (rebuild); a couple look pretty complete. The business is housed in an old building whose interior is lighted by parallel rows of garish florescent lights that burn (a couple flicker) all day since the building's large picture windows were permanently boarded up after being broken out by vandals.

Who's buying this stuff? Nobody. "Economy's bad," Stan explains, "And I could sure use some sales, right now." Since he used to offer financing (credit) to his customers, a lot of people still owe him money from the former business, and most of them aren't paying. Stan has to file a claim (to garnish wages) against them, but can only do that if he has the extra $40 it costs to do so. Why don't they pay? "People are hurtin' here. They've been hurtin' for as long as I can remember, and can't afford to pay much for anything." Most of Stan's customers can't qualify for a credit card, don't have checking accounts, and "most live from paycheck to paycheck, if they're lucky enough to get a paycheck," he adds.

In 2006, Stan was approached by Ruth Nelson who wanted to buy his home furnishings business and transform it into her own decorator studio and interior design business. The deal was struck and Nelson's live-in male companion (then district judge Donald Schutte) bought the building from Stan with no hitches. Schutte apparently gave the building to Nelson as she is singularly listed as the owner of record at the Quay County Tax Assessor's Office. Nelson produced and presented a contract to Stan stating the terms under which she would purchase his business and inventory (valued at approximately $118,000 which Stan was discounting to her for approximately $63,000). Nelson was buying only the new merchandise from Stan and she understood that Stan would retain the used items to sell as used merchandise. Nelson was to pay for the inventory over time... or at least that's what Stan believes one of the contracts stated. You see, Nelson presented a number of versions of the contract to Stan over several days. Trusting, and in good faith, Stan signed each version of the contract that Nelson presented to him, but Stan was never given a copy of the final contract. Stan repeatedly asked Nelson for a copy, but those requests were ignored.

In 2007, Stan spent 30 full days in hospital battling and overcoming a case of pneumonia from which most people his age would have died. While Stan was still recovering at home, Nelson wrote a letter charging Stan with breach of contract, citing that she had seen a (free, courtesy) phone listing (not an advertisement) for his business in a telephone directory, and that Nelson had been told by a customer (hearsay) that Stan's staff had offered to order new items for them. For Nelson, these two events justified charging Stan with breach of a non-compete clause that was allegedly part of their terms of sale. This alleged breach therefore justified why she had the right to (abruptly) discontinue making payments to Stan for the inventory. Stan wasn't offered an opportunity to discuss the matter.

Meanwhile, Stan was slowly recovering from his illness and gradually returning to work. Stan continued to struggle to make payments on the original business loan he had obtained to buy the inventory that Nelson had bought, but now refused to pay for. Nelson was selling that inventory for pure profit and was realizing huge success in a faltering economy. This may explain how there were times when Nelson was able to sell $7,000 to $10,000 worth of merchandise each week... for a while.

Now comes the rub. Stan's family attorney (and CPA) refused to involve himself with a lawsuit against Nelson, not unlike five other attorneys across the state of New Mexico who, likewise, cited "conflicts of interest." Apparently, Nelson's live-in male companion (Schutte), the former New Mexico district judge and attorney also holds a seat on the New Mexico Bar Association Review Board, a position that could be politically dangerous for an opposing attorney to twiddle with.

Stan met with the sixth attorney in Albuquerque, a specialist in elder abuse law, who requested a $2000 retainer which he had borrowed from family members. To begin, the attorney requested a copy of the contract three times from Nelson who ignored the requests. The attorney wrote a letter of demand for payment to Ruth Nelson and Don Schutte. Schutte responded that he had nothing to do with the contract between Stanley Jennings and Ruth Nelson, and that Nelson would probably respond through her own legal counsel. (Keep in mind Nelson was living with Schutte, an attorney and former district judge capable of advising her in matters regarding business ethics, best practices, and taking appropriate legal actions.) Nelson did not respond to the letter.

The attorney told Stan that she would initiate a lawsuit against Nelson (and Nelson's attorney-judge-pro-bono-legal-counsel boyfriend for his role) if Stan provides a $10,000 retainer... which will only pay for "discovery" and filing initial paperwork. A subsequent trial or further legal action would be at an additional expense to Stan. With what Stan owes already on the business loan for the inventory, and borrowing the initial attorney fees, the old man would be looking at $100,000 of debt at age 83. This level of debt he'd never experienced in his life. The attorney voiced concern that Stan might not be able to physically weather the depositions, inquiries, interrogation, investigation, trial, or trials to come. [In the event that Stan died, he wouldn't be alive to pay for services rendered by the attorney, which probably explained the reason for such a large, up-front retainer.]

So now this elderly cornerstone of the community is caught in a no-win situation. Why? The attorney outlined Stan's options and possible options of outcome:

1). If Stan initiates a lawsuit against Nelson (along with her attorney-judge-pro-bono-legal-counsel boyfriend), and wins, it may be ruled that Nelson must pay Stan's legal fees, court costs, intangible and tangible damages that could total in excess of $100,000. Could (or would) Nelson pay this? Not if she demonstrates the inability to pay, and that might be pretty easy for her to do. Game over. Stan loses... and he would still owe court and legal costs... and would have to continue to pay on the business loan for the inventory.

2). If Stan initiates a lawsuit, odds are, Nelson (and her attorney-judge-pro-bono-legal-counsel boyfriend) would counter-sue Stan with the pointed strategy of elongating the legal process, thereby financially breaking and/or out-living the old man Stan. Game over. Stan loses with his debts being transferred to his estate, or to his elderly widow who also loses... along with his children and grandchildren (who may have had some sort of inheritance prior to such a lawsuit).

3). If Nelson counter-sues Stan and wins, Stan would probably be required to pay Nelson's court costs, tangible and intangible damages, as well as legal costs to her now exorbitantly expensive attorney-judge-NOT pro-bono-legal-counsel boyfriend who will have suddenly transformed into the most expensive legal counsel on earth. Stan loses absolutely everything because the attorney-judge-legal-counsel boyfriend would probably file a lien against every asset Stan has.

New Mexico Attorney General, Gary King advocates a strong stance on the protection of elders against abuse, both physical and financial. Yet a representative from the New Mexico Adult Protective Services Division stated that Stan's situation isn't really a case of financial elder abuse and that his case should be handled by law, through the legal system. If you review the options that the legal system offers (stated above), it is fairly easy to see that it offers little, if any, hope or opportunity for Stan to prevail in this situation.

Stan's retirement "plan" was simple. He wanted to spend his last days restoring Model A Fords, the kind he admired as a young man, but could never afford. Stan owns more than one shirt now, but his eyes tear up when he reflects about the moment when he had saved up enough money to buy two new shirts to have at one time. He gets up every morning, showers and shaves, checks his blood sugar, takes his insulin and other prescribed medications. He eats a little breakfast and feeds a group of cats before "going to work" at Fort Bascom Trading Post as a seller of used odds and ends, in an effort to make ends meet. For him, the weight of the world seems far heavier than it had 30, 40, 50 or 60 years ago. And he realizes he lacks strength. It seemed that Stan was headed on the same doomed path as the burn-gutted drugstore where he had once worked as a young man, only his suffering is lasting quite a bit longer. Stan is fast becoming the sun-dried hawk that fought for its life in the store display window until it could fight no longer, when no one either noticed or cared or tried to help it survive.

This is one of those little stories about the unknown underdog featured on television's 60 Minutes, 20/20, 48 Hours or Nightline. How can an elderly, almost gone, and nearly forgotten man get noticed by those globally viewed and respected programs? Who can help him, and who cares for guys like this anyway? Wear your comfortable walking shoes on the plane, pack your sandals and one (yes, I said one) nice pair of shoes for going out. Throw in folding slippers for the hotel, and flip-flops for the beach, and you'll still have lots of room for everything else.

5. Pack a few scarves or light shawls, and some funky necklaces and bracelets and you can turn any dress into three or four entirely different outfits.

6. Invest in a good Toiletry Kit, so you're not bringing giant bottles of product, but just the amount you need. This will also help you get that carry-on through security if you make sure your toiletry kit is compliant with flight regulations. Most of them even come with a hook, so you can hang it on the back of the bathroom door when you're at your hotel.

7. Don't pack books, buy a Kindle reader and leave your stack of vacation paperbacks at home.

8. Don't forget you can buy things you may need when you arrive, such as toothpaste, shampoo or sunscreen. No need to bring it from home.

9. Last, but not least, invest in one of those incredible little folding nylon suitcases that are wallet sized to start, but fold out into a full sized suitcase. While it's important to pack sensibly at the beginning of your vacation, you will need room to pack all your souvenirs for the trip home.

I'll be forthright: I'm not a homemaker. I feel more at ease constantly on the move, city after city, mountaintop to seaside surf, living out of my suitcase and fumbling through a foreign language phrase book, than I feel even comfy and cozy, napping on my couch on a Sunday afternoon. Perhaps I'm a little crazy, but I find it thrilling sprinting to make a connecting flight (even if it's the red eye); I believe it convenient when the airline informs me my luggage is a flight behind, leaving unencumbered to begin sightseeing immediately; and I think myself resourceful when I arrive at a booked hotel only to realize I forgot to make reservations but still haggle a room. Of course, while I don't mind any of the perceived headaches of traveling, I do mind the high costs often associated with it. Traveling, for me, is primarily about escaping--whether it be work, commuting, obligations, sometimes even family and friends--but how is it an escape if I'm worried about how much I'm spending the entire trip?

I mention cost as something that would potentially worry me were it not for the fact that, in reality, it doesn't worry me at all. At least not since I wised up, did the requisite research and taught myself the agent tricks of the travel trade. Travel agents' tricks that is, because in addition to being a constant traveler and writer, I am also a licensed travel agent. Not in the sense that I work for others, booking their hotels, finding their flights, or landing them a deal on an Alaskan cruise. Truth is, I only use my license for personal escapes (well, okay, occasionally for family and friends too, but only when their remarks regarding my debonair good lucks are particularly flattering).

If you've never heard of this travel industry loophole before, this may sound somewhat (or completely) preposterous. In fact, however, it is quite common among everyday people, both those who travel often or but once a year, both those whose work relates to travel to those whose work relates only to that which remains stationary. What I mean, plain and simple, is anyone--you, me, your second cousin Otto, or my next-door neighbor Irene--can get their travel agent's license lickety-split, and immediately begin reaping the benefits.

First things first: when making travel arrangements for themselves, every agent knows not to book a single step of their journey through one of their own, i.e. other travel agents. Instead, they use travel consolidators.

Think about the difference those terms: agent and consolidator.

An agent, in any industry where they're principal players, obviously gets something in return for the services they provide. In sports, agents represent athletes, working off the field to win their clients lucrative contracts and commercial cameos so the athlete can in turn, without financial distractions, concentrate and win on the field. For these services, agents win themselves a percentage of each transaction is the broker. The same is true in the entertainment, modeling, or business is worth if it rotates Headhunter and be multi-million dollar salaries and incentives for their clients CEO. Once that is set to go, the only added costs are that of extra paper and ink. The travel industry is the same, the more spaces that fill, the cheaper tickets or rooms become per person. As in any industry, consumers (i.e. travelers in this case) benefit from the sheer volume of numbers (i.e. all travelers, yourself included).

You, as a licensed travel agent would obtain special contact with these consolidators and the deals vendors must offer to maximize their costs per person. But while it's all well and good to make arrangements through a consolidator as opposed to an agent, just because you acquire a license (available online in under an hour) doesn't mean the consolidator will believe you're as much a travel professional as they are. To avoid common mistakes that expose amateurs from pros, you must learn the proper lingo and travel codes. For that there are volumes of eBooks (with corresponding printed versions) that provide the requisite knowledge, which you can quickly study before contacting a consolidator and easily flip through if put on the spot. Get these references. Some of them are thick, but in reality you'll spend less than a hundred dollars on everything you need to in turn potentially save thousands on the first trip you plan with your travel agent's license in hand.

Furthermore, instead of turning to the discount fare finders like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity or Priceline that lay-travelers search, as a travel agent, you additionally gain access to the lesser known, but more lucrative sites travel consolidators utilize.

Together, the benefits will materialize almost immediately. Buy plane tickets the day before the flight's scheduled to depart, but only pay what you would have had you purchased tickets two months in advance. Get a spacious cruise ship cabin beside the captain's quarters for the price of an ocean-level closet. Find yourself lodging in the seaside, honeymoon suite for the price you might have paid for the basement hide-a-bed beside the ice machine.

Finally, the travel industry is a weird and wonderful creature, in this case, thankfully profit driven as much as other industries we often loathe. Hemkund means snow lake and is one of the famous pilgrimage destinations of Sikhs. Hemkund Sahib is located at an altitude of about 4,329 meters above sea level in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. Hemkund Sahib is covered by seven mountains, collectively called as Hemkund Parvat, which remain covered with snow almost all over the year. At one end of the Hemkund lake is the famous Gurudwara, which is the holy pilgrimage destination of Sikhs.

History of the Hemkund Sahib

According to a famous legend, the tenth guru of Sikhs, Guru Govind Singh, did meditation here on the banks of Hemkund river. This is why a Gurudwara has been built at this place which is visited by a large number of pilgrims every year from far off destinations. A number of other Hindu sages and saints used to meditate at this place. It is also said that Lakshman, the brother of Lord Rama, performed penance here and one can also find a temple on one side of the lake, which is dedicated to Lakshman. Hemkund lake is the source of Lakshman Ganga, which starts from Gangaria and upto that place a stream flows from Hemkund lake through Valley of Flowers.

Climate and the Best Time to Visit

Climate at Hemkund Saheb is cold and it remains cut off from rest of the places in the winter months because of the heavy snowfall in the area. Temperature in winters drops down upto -10 degree celsius and a maximum temperature in summer rises upto 15 degree celsius. The best time to visit Hemkund Sahib is from July to October.

Attractions of Hemkund Saheb

Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara

Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara is structure of holy pilgrimage of Sikhs, which has been constructed in a star shape. The whole structure has been built of stone and concrete. It has been built in the memory of Guru Gobind Singh.

Lakshman Temple

There is a beautiful small temple on one side of Hemkund Lake, which is dedicated to Lakshman, brother of Lord Rama. This is also one of the famous temples flocked by a large number of Hindus every year.

Hemkund Lake

Hemkund Lake is also known by the name of Lokpal Lake. Its crystal clear water presents the serene picture of the surrounding landscape. The lake is feeded by the melting snow of Hathi Parvat and Saptrishi peak.

How to Reach Hemkund Saheb

By Air : Nearest airport to reach Hemkund Sahib is Jolly Grant, which is located in Dehradun (307 km), the capital city of Uttarakhand. It is connected by Kingfisher Airlines from Delhi on daily basis. From Dehradun, one has to cover the distance by road, hiring cab or by Uttarakhand Transport Roadways Corporation buses upto Govindghat. From Govindghat, one has to cover the distance of 19 km on foot.

By Train : Nearest railway stations to Hemkund Sahib are Rishikesh (293 km) and Haridwar (310 km). Some of the main trains which connect Rishikesh with other cities include Doon Express from Howrah Junction and Hemkunt Express from Jammu Tawi, on routine basis. From Rishikesh one can hire a cab or can travel by Uttarakhand Transport Roadways Corporation buses to reach Govindghat, from where one needs to cover rest of the distance on foot.

By Road : Hemkund Sahib is located at a distance of 19 km from Govindghat via Ghangaria, which is approachable by foot. Govindghat is connected by road to Rishikesh (270 km) and other towns of Uttarakhand.
